When is the last time I have gone without clean water, food, clothing….basic human needs? The answer is never, and neither has most or nearly all of Americans, and yet billions of people go without their basic needs being met on a daily basis. Is this justice? I would say not, and the church, as a whole, the people who show up to worship every Sunday or Wednesday, or whatever day, mostly…do…nothing, and it breaks the heart of God. We are only 6% of the worlds population and yet we consume 30% or more of its resources (Americans)…We are a nation who claims to Christians at a 90% rate, and yet every 8 seconds 1 child dies from disease because of unclean water…We enjoy our sacrifices, you know showing up to the church building, our worship systems, but ignore injustice. This is not an attack or bash, but a call to the heart of the follower of Christ. If we believe that His way is the right way, then we must seek to heal this world, these wounds as He would do. The bible says in proverbs, Hosea, and Micah that God prefers justice to sacrifice…Jesus says “Learn what this means, I desire mercy over sacrifice”. So how can we continue to bring our sacrifice of worship, or worship system to God, but not concern ourselves with the injustice of the world? We are called to reclaim the broken places, to bind the broken hearted, to heal the wounded world, to bring justice where injustice reigns…14 billion dollars would cure the worlds water problem, but Americans spend 18 billion a year on makeup, 26 billion a holiday on gift cards…this is injustice, and we must alter the course of human history. So I ask have you eaten today. Are your clothes relatively clean? Is your water fresh? Then why shouldn’t Darfur, Cambodia, Guatemala, and others have the same. Before we take another sacrifice to God, let’s be a part of healing the world, and bringing the hand of justice…WWJD, it is more than just a bracelet.
